At Origami Labs we accelerate the development and adoption of advanced artificial intelligence and autonomous systems to solve some of the most challenging problems we face in the world. Formed in 2022, we’re an SME with the freedom to follow our ideas and live our values. As a small team everyone drives our direction, has a direct impact on what we create and collaborates closely with our customers and partners.

  • Do you find yourself asking “what if?”, but not having the time to explore your ideas? We believe in open innovation, creativity, and rapid prototyping to test new concepts and see where they fail. The ideas that show promise can be truly game changing and challenge conventional thinking. At Origami Labs we unfold the unthinkable.

    We’d love to be able to shout about the specific challenges we tackle but they’re often sensitive in nature. What we can say is that we punch well above our weight and work across diverse domains from next gen submarines to fighter aircraft, uncrewed systems to detecting AI-generated information. Most of our projects begin without us knowing the answer.

    We collaborate closely with our customers and end users to deeply understand their problem and evaluate potential solutions in the real world. We often work with limited data, small edge compute devices, and challenging operational constraints. Our customers value our integrity and the pace at which we can bring our novel ideas to fruition.

  • We firmly believe that it is diversity of skills and experience that drives our innovation and creativity. We are not after a fixed set of skills, we are instead looking for someone who shares our vision and passion for making an impact.

    Are you passionate about new technology and driven to test out ideas? Are you comfortable with not knowing if/how a problem can be solved, but determined to find a viable approach? Do you have interesting perspectives on AI and the wider world that challenge convention? Are you self-motivated and able to manage your own time? Are you naturally collaborative? Can you communicate your ideas effectively?

    Technical expertise is important, but we recognise that everyone is at a different stage of their journey and we work in a very broad field. We provide a supportive environment in which to learn new skills and keep up with the latest advances. We’re particularly interested if you have a background in Computer Vision (e.g. working with RGB, IR or HSI sensors), Multi-Objective Optimisation or Simulation but we’re also keen to hear from candidates with experience in other branches of ML, AI, & autonomy. A background in Software Engineering would also be a big plus to any of the other desirable skills.

What skills could you bring?

We don’t have set roles or regularly repeated projects, but here are some example profiles and tasks to help explain what we do.

  • Making data tidy makes you happy. Missing values don't ruin your day, you know how to impute with uncertainty. You have strong opinions on 3D graphs.

    A typical task might be in linking datasets together to enable wider exploitation, e.g. open source hydrophone recordings linked to ship AIS locations, GIS data, and engine databases so we can work out what we're hearing.

  • You're someone who loves watching the error go down when you train a model. You know how to deploy a model onto an edge device, and find out why it's fallen over.

    A typical task might be combining a series of computer vision models to improve tracking and re-identification of objects in video from a moving platform.

  • You do way too much trig - it turns out that triangles are really important. Pure maths is amazing, but you really like applying it to the physical world.

    A typical task might be designing a multi-objective function for unmanned vehicles to search an area, then creating an optimiser to solve that in real time on board the vehicle. No pressure.

  • Your skills may not fit into one of those categories, - ideally you're a bit of a blend! We want a diverse range of thinkers to come help us solve challenging problems.

    As long as you're talented, friendly, self-motivated, and with a passion for making a difference through technology then you'll be right at home.

  • We are a remote working organisation with team members spread across the country. We regularly take the opportunity to get together in person to share ideas, devise cunning masterplans and get to know each other better. We also travel to meet customers, attend events and to test technology.

    We’ll provide whatever you need to create an effective working space based on your circumstances. This typically includes some combination of high-end desktop and/or laptop computers, monitors, chairs and desks.

    We understand that every person works most effectively in different ways and has their own responsibilities and needs outside of work. Each member of our team has a flexible working pattern that works for them, whether that’s related to childcare responsibilities, part-time study or looking after a puppy. We can find a flexible working approach that works for all parties.

  • Our key offering is the acceleration of emerging research into operational capabilities. A key part of your role will be to understand the state of current research and identify how it can be applied to solve challenging real world problems.

    Being comfortable generating and pitching new ideas through continuous learning is central to our culture and what we offer our customers.

    At Origami Labs we all wear multiple hats and get stuck in wherever we're needed. We have a strong focus on turning ideas into software, presenting our ideas and (possibly failed) R&D results, managing our projects and testing our prototypes in the field.

    We are primarily Python/Pytorch when it comes to software but we believe in using the right tools for the job. Transferable software skills and a willingness to learn are what we're really looking for.

    We predominantly work in the Defence and Security domains but see lots of transferability to other markets. Whilst experience in these areas would be helpful it's not essential. Given the sensitivities of our work we would need you to be eligible for, and willing to seek UK security clearance.

    • A very competitive salary depending on skills and experience. We don't have fixed salary brackets and believe in fair pay, so let us know your expectations in your email.

Hiring Process

Step 1: Email

Submit your CV and a short covering letter outlining what you can offer Origami Labs and your salary expectations to careers@origamilabs.co.uk by the closing date of 31st July 2026.

We’ll assess whether we think your skills and experience are potentially a good match for us. Early applications are encouraged as we may begin interviewing before the closing date.

Step 2: Chat

A short 30 minute video call so we can all get to know each other a little more, answer any immediate questions and understand how well you’d fit into the team.

Step 3: Interview

A more in-depth video interview (60-90 minutes) where we’ll dive a little deeper. We’ll ask you to come prepared with a 10-minute presentation (bring visual aids if helpful) on a subject within AI and/or autonomous systems that interests you. We do this to spark discussion in an area you’re familiar with. Following that we’ll ask some questions to understand how you think and gain insight into your experience.
